I've never made bread before. I think my mom did on occasion when I was younger, and I remember how amazing the house smelled while it baked. I wanted to make bread for Kirk because he loves it and it's one way to save a little money, but I hesitated because bread making is technical. There's the yeast thing, the kneading, shaping, rising, blah blah blah. The only mixing device I have is my grandma's old Sunbeam--no "dough hook" included. Just the beaters. This mixer, bless it's heart, is probably 2 1/2 times my age but it worked fine for banana bread! Why shouldn't it be able to handle Oatmeal Wheat
Things started off great; put all the stuff in the bowl, add the yeast, start mixing in the flour. . . and that's when things turned bad. I turned off the mixer to get the THICK dough out of the beaters and one of them was mangled!
That thing was probably an heirloom and worth money! And I still had a cup and a half of flour to mix in! Undeterred, I did it the old fashioned way, with my hands. It still turned out fairly well, maybe just a little dense. But I did get that freshly-baked-bread aroma!
It's all about the breadmaker! Only ours needs a small repair, so I've been missing the smell of fresh baked bread. I wish I had the time to do it by hand, but I don't.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me laugh that you thought the beater would do the job. = ) Maybe you can bend it back in to shape, or get a replacement (check DI).
Kudos to you for trying!
haha I love it! But I'm impressed, I still haven't attempted bread making. I live by all family, everyone seems to send home a loaf with me when I leave!
ReplyDeleteLoved your bread experience and congratulations for attempting breadmaking in the first year of marriage. I didn't try it for MANY years. Is that Gramma Deckers mixer. It sure looks familiar. Suggestion: take both beaters with you to Target, Walmart, etc. and try to find replacement ones. Or online. Good luck.

ReplyDeleteI have two words for you...dough hooks! You are a nut! I am still laughing. (I got that pic message in the movie theater with the boyz and Mamasita and Tina of course. Jealous?)
ReplyDeleteEmily and Carol-thanks for the suggestion, and yes it is Grandma Decker's mixer. Does that make it an official heirloom? Yikes.
ReplyDeleteAsh-Definitely take advantage of people that will give you homemade bread. If you start making your own now, people will stop giving it to you.
Tara-Gasp! Did you go see the Time Traveler's Wife?? What movie?
